PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia man who shot his girlfriend and their baby inside a Kingsessing home two years ago will spend at least the next few years behind bars.

Desmond Brunson, who pleaded guilty in April to aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children and a weapons charge, was sentenced to five to 12 years in prison plus probation Friday. He’s been in jail since the shooting.

Two of the children who were in the house the night of the shooting tearfully told Judge Zach Shaffer at a sentencing hearing about the fear, trauma and anger they still have years after Brunson shot their mom – who was Brunson’s girlfriend at the time – and their 1-year-old daughter in October 2021.

The baby suffered a graze wound to the stomach. The children’s mother, who was shot twice in the back and in a coma for 33 days is now paralyzed. She spoke of how she’s been separated from her children because of the special care she now needs, and how that’s impacted her ability to provide for them, play with them or walk them down the aisle. She said she cries everyday, feeling broken and depressed.

Brunson told Shaffer how sorry he was and apologized to the woman, her family and his family.

Shaffer told Brunson, “you’ll be able to walk free one day, but the person you shot will never walk again.”

“You lost caring, compassionate people when you pulled the trigger – and that’s the worst sentence,” he added.
