MEDIA, PA (KYW Newsradio) — After years of planning, officials in Delaware County broke ground Wednesday on a new playground that represents a push forward for parks projects across the area.
Delaware County Council recently committed to investing more than $9 million into parks, trails and open space, according to County Director of Public Works Danielle Floyd, and one of their major projects is the $1.8 million Destination Playground at Rose Tree Park in Media.
“It is going to be the largest playground that we’ve ever installed here in the county,” Floyd said. “It’s going to be open and accessible for kids of all ages and abilities.”
Floyd says the more than 2,000-square-foot park will have climbing towers, a promenade, a pavilion and lots of other amenities. And many of the play structures will be able to support kids who have physical disabilities, which Floyd says is really exciting.
Planning for the playground started in 2021 and it’s expected to open early this summer.
“This is something that’s going to be a great addition to our park system and for our patrons, particularly youth of Delaware county,” said Delaware County Parks and Recreation Director Marc Manfre.
