PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia Eagle is helping dogs get adopted at the Pennsylvania SPCA, part of a effort to get people to "adopt, not shop" when looking for a pet.

All season long, Eagles punter Cam Johnston will be covering adoption fees for some dogs at the PSPCA.

PSPCA's Gillian Kocher says the more punts, the more dogs whose adoptions will be paid for by the NFL player.

"For every punt that the Eagles down within the 20-yard line, Cam is sponsoring an adoption for a dog," she explained.

Kocher said it's an effort to get prospective pet owners to consider adopting a dog rather than purchasing one.

"What we are doing is that each week we are taking a look at our shelter population and seeing who is here, which dogs are here that really need a little additional promotion. So they are not dogs that have adopters lined up," she shared.

The three dogs that need homes selected so far for "Punts for PSPCA" are Solo, Clyde and Nala.

"These are dogs that may be new to us or may have been here for a little bit longer and need that extra push, that extra platform to get some eyes on them," said Kocher.

"All of the dogs we have here are all deserving of forever homes and sometimes there are ones that just get overlooked."

Kocher said one of Johnston's dogs, Bella, is a PSPCA alum.
