NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Cooper University Health Care has a new program available for aspiring Emergency Medical Technicians.
In partnership with Camden County College, the program is intended to increase staffing for EMTs and, in turn, increase response times for when someone dials 911, says Ron Murphy, the EMS clinical manager at Cooper.
“Those calls actually increased,” he explained. “We don’t have the appropriate staff to handle those. Almost every day becomes a health care crisis.”
While classes have already begun at Camden City Campus for the first group of students, Murphy says admissions are rolling and they will continue to have new groups go through training.
According to Camden County College, after students complete the necessary coursework to obtain their EMT certification, graduates of the program will be given the opportunity to participate in a 120-hour clinical tour with Cooper EMS.
Rick Rohrbach, director of air and ground EMS at Cooper, says this is a great way for someone interested in a health care career to get their foot in the door.
“Nursing is certainly an option, medical school, we have EMTs that ultimately go to medical school and become doctors,” he said.
