PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two men from Delaware County have now been charged in connection with the shooting of a Philadelphia police officer on Wednesday. The alleged shooter, from Delaware County, has a lengthy criminal record.

Police arrested Eric Haynes in Darby around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

About 3:30 p.m. that day in West Philadelphia, on North 60th Street near Race Street, a 32-year-old police officer was shot twice in the abdomen.

“I’m shot, I’m shot,” 19th district officer Giovanni Maysonet, a five-year veteran of the force, relayed over police radio.

“I think I’m shot twice. Tell my family I love them if I don’t make it.”

He was shot while he and his partner were conducting a vehicle investigation for heavily-tined windows, according to police.

The officers approached the stopped silver Lexus from both sides. Authorities said a passenger — Haynes — got out of the vehicle and turned away from Maysonet. In response, Maysonet grasped his midsection with both hands. That’s when, police said, Haynes fired his weapon.

The other officer discharged his gun at Haynes, but he was not struck.

When Maysonet got to the hospital, it turned out his bulletproof vest caught one of the bullets. The other bullet went through his torso and out his back.

“He actually shot this officer with a gun in the pocket of the hooded sweatshirt,” said Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office Homicide Supervisor Joanne Pescatore.

“The gun is never visible and you see a flash, so Officer Maysonet is lucky to be alive.”

Law enforcement sources say the entire incident was caught on on body-worn camera. Two other people were in the car. Both were taken into custody.

Haynes, who sources say also goes by the name Michael Gore, was identified as the shooter and was arrested after being found sitting in a parked car on Guyer Avenue near James Finnegan Playground. He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault on law enforcement, and related gun charges — and is no stranger to police.

According to court documents, Haynes has a criminal record in both Philadelphia and Delaware counties for several drug and gun charges, aggravated assault, and fleeing from police & resisting arrest. He also faces federal selling stolen car offenses.

Ernest Reid, 42, allegedly was the driver. He has been charged with tampering with evidence, possession of an instrument in a crime and related offenses, and also has a lengthy record.

A third person who was inside the car has not yet been charged, but officials say the investigation is ongoing.

Maysonet was initially in critical condition, but is now stable.

Police said he is physically recovering and is “in good spirits.” As part of police policy, his partner who fired back remains on desk duty until the outcome of the investigation.
