Expert: OK to be anxious about post-pandemic return to activity

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Who's vaccinated, who's not, and who should I feel safe around?

Those are some of the big questions people are asking as gatherings resume following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

Some experts believe a little anxiety is normal when it comes to rejoining society after such a pandemic.

"For some people that transition is going to take a little bit longer. That's not unusual. For others, that transition is going to be a little quicker," said Michael Alleruzzo, a faculty member at St. Joseph's University's business school who is also a leadership coach and consultant.

He said that just like it took some time to get used to social distancing and extended periods of isolation, it may take some time to get back to prepandemic socialization.

"We need to be patient with ourselves if we're feeling that anxiety," he said.

"We need to be true and honest with ourselves and we need to listen to ourselves. If we're feeling anxious, keep the mask on, or maybe don't just dive into the deep end of the social pool. Dip your toe in the water see how you're feeling."

Alleruzzo adds it's important to be understanding when it comes to friends and family who may be anxious about gathering or meeting in person.
