FBI says would-be Trump assassin also considered Biden as a target

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The FBI's investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has revealed no motive and no evidence of a co-conspirator or accomplice or any sign of foreign involvement. Correspondent Scott MacFarlane spoke with KYW's Michelle Durham about this and other developments from Capitol Hill.

The investigation also revealed that the shooter, Thomas Crooks, had meticulously planned the attack, which is striking, because investigators believe his actions were not driven by a specific political ideology but rather a desire to find a significant “target of opportunity” to attack.

Before he became hyper-focused on the event not far from home in Butler County, investigators say, he checked the schedules of Trump and President Joe Biden, including the Republican and Democratic conventions.

Some try to shift blame for Capitol riot to Pelosi

Trump faces a new Jan. 6 indictment, which includes the same four felony charges, with no additional co-defendants. To avoid conflicts with the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity, special counsel has removed references to allegations that Trump worked with the Justice Department to push false election claims.

The case will have a status conference hearing in the coming week, indicating that it will soon be back in court.

Meanwhile, newly released video clips, showing former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi responding to the Capitol riot may be used politically by Republicans and Democrats. She is shown calling for Trump's prompt impeachment, invoking the 25th Amendment, and acknowledging the security failures of Capitol security on Jan. 6. Some now blame Pelosi for the riot, while others still blame Trump for not stopping it from happening.
