CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A firefighter was injured while battling a row home fire in Camden early Tuesday morning.

Crews responded around 4:30 a.m. to the house on Spruce Street, near Ninth Street. The neighborhood is just off of I-676.

The fire was placed under control and neighbors were allowed to return to their homes around 7 a.m.

The Camden fire chief said the firefighter suffered minor injuries to his shoulder and legs but is in stable condition.

No one was in the home when firefighters arrived, but neighbors said squatters have been living there for years.

Charmaine Jones, who lives next door to the home that caught fire, said she was woken up by someone screaming for help.

“I heard somebody outside holler, ‘Help, help! Call the cops. Fire, fire!’” she said. “He said, ‘Call 911 and get out of there.’ So I did.”

Crews are assessing and cleaning up the damage left behind by the fire, and also working to determine how it started.
