PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The former governor of Pennsylvania and first secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is now in stable condition after suffering a stroke last week.

A spokesperson for Tom Ridge said he is recovering at a Washington, D.C.-area hospital. The 75-year-old suffered a stroke at his Bethesda, Maryland, home and underwent a procedure to remove a blood clot.

Former Pennsylvania first lady Michele Ridge said last week that the politician is a “determined fighter” who has “come back strong from health challenges in the past.”

Ridge served as Pennsylvania’s Republican governor from 1995 to 2001, then joined the Bush administration post-9/11 as the nation’s first homeland security secretary.
