PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The 26th annual Philadelphia Fringe Festival is set to return this fall with almost all in-person events.
FringeArts’ month of performances had to move to some virtual formats due to COVID-19 in recent years, but it is finally inching closer to looking like its pre-pandemic festival.
“The thing we’re all excited about is that we’re back in person. Over 90% of the almost 200 independent artist shows are in person, and that’s fantastic,” said Nick Stuccio, Fringe Arts president and executive director.
The festival showcases different performing arts shows at theaters and venues around the city, giving attendees a number of different genres to take in.
“Theater, dance, music, circus,” said Stuccio. “There’s … a lot of shows that cross between all of those things.”
The festival features artists from near and far, but a big draw this year is the world premiere of a show called “FOOD” by Geoff Sobelle. The performance is an “intimate dinner party performance of smell, taste, and touch” that offers “a meditation on the ways and whys of eating.”
“Sobelle is an artist who moved here over 20 years ago and he now is kind of famous,” Stuccio added. “When he makes a new show, it’s a big deal and it tours the world for years.”
The festival runs from Sept. 8 to Oct. 2. Tickets for members go on sale on Aug. 5 and open to the general public on Aug. 8. Visit fringearts.com for more information.
