PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A cop who was shot four months ago in the line of duty is speaking out about his road to recovery.
Dozens of family, friends and fellow officers, wearing t-shirts that read “Stay in the Fight,” gathered for a fundraiser for Giovanni Maysonet at the Fraternal Order of Police headquarters in Northeast Philadelphia.
Maysonet, of the 19th district, says he has undergone several surgeries after he was shot during a traffic stop in West Philadelphia in February.
“I’m lucky to be here. I’m blessed to be here,” he said, but it’s not over yet.
“I got surgery again in July, so it’s basically going to be a restart of everything.”
He says the recovery process has been rough.
“Emotionally it’s rough,” he said. “Still can’t pick up my kids.”
All proceeds from the fundraiser are supporting Maysonet and his family. A GoFundMe in his name has already raised about $25,000 of a $30,000 goal.
While there’s still a long road to recovery ahead, Maysonet is still looking forward to putting his uniform back on. His message during Gun Violence Awareness Month: “Put the guns down. Just put the guns down.”
