NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Glassboro has a new artificial intelligence program that can detect guns in its schools and automatically alert police.
This pilot program is in place at all public schools in Glassboro. It combines the AI gun detection technology of Pennsylvania-based ZeroEyes with the rapid communication system Singlewire to provide school officials and first responders with detailed information if a gun is brought into a school.
“The integration was free of charge because we are the pilot district,” said Glassboro Superintendent Dr. Al Lewis.
He says if there is a positive detection, the school‘s doors lock electronically and the emergency strobe lights go on.
“It’ll automatically call 911, notify law enforcement, and it’s integrated with law enforcement itself, so that way we not only know a firearm is hypothetically present, we also know where the firearm is in real time, which obviously helps protect law enforcement if they’re responding to a threat.”
Dr. Lewis says they have not needed to use it yet, but the peace of mind it provides is appreciated by everyone he has spoken with.
The software works with school security cameras, so those who want to use it likely wouldn’t have to replace their existing system.
“This integration with Singlewire is a powerful example of how two technologies can complement each other to enhance school safety,” said Mike Lahiff, CEO and co-founder of ZeroEyes. “While ZeroEyes provides the critical early detection of a potential threat, Singlewire enables that intelligence to be instantly delivered across a wide range of devices and formats. It’s a mutually beneficial partnership that simplifies emergency response and helps protect lives.”
