Glassboro-Camden Line reaches next stop on its long journey to construction

SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A light rail project connecting Glassboro to Camden is moving forward to the pre-engineering and design phase.

The Glassboro-Camden Line is going to be similar — albeit smaller — to the River Line, which travels between Camden and Trenton. It will have 12 stops along the route from Glassboro to the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden.

Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) chief engineer Michael Venuto said they learned a lot during the environmental impact study (EIS) phase of the project, and things are coming together.

“We’ve looked at some areas where we won’t need as much land as shown in the EIS. We’ll address those and mitigate in the engineering design,” he explained.

DRPA CEO John Hanson heard the issues raised by opponents of the rail line, and his goal is to minimize any negative community impact, especially the nuisance factor.

“We understand the importance of making this line run as quietly as possible,” he said.

Hansen said improving safety conditions near the tracks is also a top priority.

The rail line is very much a work in progress. There is no accurate estimate as to when the $1.8 billion project will be completed.

The cost could go up as well, since the current economy isn’t what it was when the original estimate was announced.
