PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Can there be middle ground between artificial intelligence doomsday claims and President Donald Trump dismissing AI concerns as a hoax?
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro thinks so.
The Democrat delivered a keynote address at the AI Horizons summit in Pittsburgh on Thursday. He said he doesn’t think it’s “inevitable” that artificial intelligence will take over the world or that someone will “misuse it to kill us” — if tough regulations and other safeguards are in place.
“We need to beat China on AI,” he said, “but the idea that we have to choose between protecting our people from the risks posed by AI and winning the race against China — well, that is just wrong.”
Shapiro is taking a tougher approach on AI, a year after he celebrated Amazon’s investment in a data center in Bucks County.
He called for “rules that require independent third-party oversight of frontier models and increased transparency into the development of these models,” prioritizing “safety above all else.”
His opponent in the governor’s race, Republican Stacy Garrity, said voters aren’t “fooled” by Shapiro’s “blind political ambitions.” Shapiro has also accused Garrity of flip-flopping on AI.
All this comes amid stark warnings about the advancements and rogue behavior of AI models.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Anthropic’s AI, Claude, hacked another AI, ChatGPT, and was able to “read and suggest changes” to the company’s internal systems. Luckily, a team of independent security researchers was behind it and alerted OpenAI.
Anthropic said Claude is significantly aiding in building its own successor. Claude is handling more than a quarter of its own model research and development.
