PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police are looking for two shooters who opened fire on Market Street in West Philadelphia Monday night, leaving one victim in critical condition.
According to police, two men in a white Nissan SUV pulled up to 59th and Market streets around 11:30 p.m., got out and opened fire at a 23-year-old man. The gunmen then got back in the SUV and drove off.
Officers arrived at the scene and took the wounded man to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition, investigators said.
The scene, directly under the El tracks and a block away from SEPTA’s 60th Street Station, was littered with about 30 shell casings from two different guns, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Two takeout restaurants were also hit by gunfire.
“Although the employees are in these businesses, none of them were struck by gunfire,” Small said, “so we’re very fortunate.”
It was a close call for another witness. A woman who drove up and parked was only a few feet away from the shooters when they opened fire, police said. Her car was hit, but she was not hurt.
A motive was not immediately clear to investigators. They are looking at surveillance footage from the neighborhood as they work to identify and find the shooters.
