OVERBROOK (KYW Newsradio) — This year is the 15th year Kenny and Keturah Duncan of Main Attraction Unisex Salon in Overbrook will be giving free haircuts in the area to kids 5-17 through their organization Barbers Who Care.
“I band together with barbers who care about the community, and we use a neutral location, so it's not about our individual barber shops, it's about just pillars of the community wanting to connect and give back,” said Kenny.
This year, like last, Barbers Who Care is bringing back former Eagle Rodney McLeod’s Change Our Future Foundation to provide some new fits and school supplies to go along with the fresh cuts.
The foundation will supply backpacks, supplies, shoes and clothes to kids getting a haircut.
Kenny said all that together can be a major cost burden or unaffordable for some parents.
“They're buying school uniforms, they're buying school supplies, and then they still have to pay for haircuts,” he said. “If you have multiple kids, it's hard for them to be able to afford everything especially when you only have one income coming in a household.”
Last year, well over 300 kids received a fresh cut, and 600 backpacks were handed out.
Keturah said the event warms her heart every year.
Keturah said the event warms her heart every year.
“There's just a high energy and excitement of how we can all get together to get these kids the best start to the year right, to help them feel ready, to help them look good,” she said.
This year’s event alongside the Change Our Future Foundation is on Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the West Philadelphia YMCA on Chestnut Street between 51st and 52nd Streets.
