Oxford man found guilty of killing father of 2, stealing his car in 2018

Prosecutors say he killed the victim because he needed a car

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An Oxford man has been found guilty of killing a man in 2018 because, as prosecutors put it, he wanted his car.

A Chester County jury found 33-year-old Hakeem Smith guilty of second-degree murder, robbery of a motor vehicle and related charges connected to the death of Samuel Algarin.

In September 2018, 31-year-old Algarin was with his mother and his two sons. They went to the kids’ martial arts lesson and then out for pizza. After that, his mother dropped him off to pick up his car, but he never made it home.

Algarin’s body was found along the side of the road in West Fallowfield Township. His phone was found about two miles from his body, and Smith’s fingerprints were on it.

Police also found video of Smith putting gas in Algarin’s SUV. Smith’s fingerprints were also found inside the car.

Prosecutors say Smith stopped Algarin along Route 10 near Oxford and shot and killed him because he needed a car.

Second-degree murder, also called felony murder, carries a mandatory life sentence.
