EAST COVENTRY, P.A. (KYW Newsradio) — An 89-year-old woman and her 90-year-old husband are dead after police said he shot her at the Manatawny Manor retirement home in East Coventry on Thursday morning. Police do not have a motive yet, but are investigating it as a murder-suicide.

Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said the man was visiting his wife around 10:45 a.m. when he shot her and then turned the gun on himself.

Authorities say the man was taken to a hospital, but died overnight. There were no other injuries.

"It really appears to be a very sad, isolated incident right now," de Barrena-Sarobe said at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

The district attorney said authorities do not know yet what prompted the shooting.

"It's really early," said de Barrena-Sarobe. "We can all sort of speculate as to what the circumstances are, but we're going to continue our investigation."

Manatawny Manor is providing counseling and support for any employees and residents affected by the shooting.
