‘I still can’t believe he’s gone’: Vigil remembers son of Philly police officer who was killed outside corner store

23-year-old Hyram Hill was shot and killed in North Philadelphia last week

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Family and friends gathered in West Philadelphia Monday night to remember the life of 23-year-old Hyram Hill, who was shot and killed last week near Temple University Hospital.

“My son touched a lot of people,” said his mother, Philadelphia Police Officer Edwenna Ferguson. “I know maybe a handful of y’all, and you all just showed up here for my son. It means a lot to me.”

Others described Hill as just a good kid who was “doing right things” — a hardworking man who had no run-ins with the law.

Dozens of balloons and sky lanterns were released into the sky, while Hill’s loved ones played his favorite songs and yelled out his name.

Ferguson, a 17-year veteran of the force, said Philadelphia homicide investigators are some of the best, including the ones looking into her son’s case.

“See, the shooters messed up. They didn’t know who they touched. They touched the wrong boy,” she said, adding that they are “not going to do it the street way. We going to do it the right way. I don’t want nobody else to grieve.”

Hill’s funeral took place Tuesday morning at the Church of Christian Compassion in Cobbs Creek.
