PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There’s just something about a quiet walk through the pines, with the leaves changing colors and bats flying around at dusk, to get you in the spooky spirit. The hooting of an owl in the eerie quiet of the Pine Barrens delivers an idyllic place to let your imagination run wild.
This is a great week to make a hiking trip in the fall foliage, and there’s a special Jersey Devil Day this weekend at Brendan Byrne State Forest.
Clint Crawn with the New Jersey Forest Service said you can learn all about the origin of the Jersey Devil.
“No one really knows exactly where it started or what the official written origin is, but it’s generally agreed upon for the Jersey Devil that he was the 13th son of a woman named Mother Leeds, in what’s now known as Leeds Point,” Crawn said.
“She cursed him and then once he was born, he was born with devil-like features and immediately escaped and started to havoc around the town.”
Despite reported sightings, most agree the Jersey Devil is a myth.
But if you’re in the mood to let your imagination run wild, head over to Byrne State Forest on Saturday, October 29 for Jersey Devil Day and you can even design your own Jersey Devil mask.
It is a great week overall to check out the hundreds of miles of trails at the state parks in South Jersey, as the foliage is near peak season.
