SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Joseph Fiordaliso, president of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, has died, Gov. Phil Murphy announced Thursday morning. He was 78.

Fiordaliso served on the BPU since 2005 and was appointed by governors from both political parties. Prior to that, he was a councilman and mayor in North Jersey.

He had been in the news recently as a proponent of offshore wind, and he was known to wear his wind turbine lapel pin everywhere.

He was also outspoken on state plans that require some new construction projects to use electric stoves, not gas.

“We are not mandating anyone to give up their gas stove,” he said in July. “If that were the case, I’d be thrown out of my own house.”

Murphy said Fiordaliso was a friend and a dedicated member of his community who had an infectious personality and a generous spirit.

Fiordaliso died at the hospital. No cause of death was given.

He is survived by his wife, two children and six grandchildren.
