PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Sixers All-Star Joel Embiid has pledged to make a difference beyond the court in Philadelphia.
The athlete announced plans this week to invest $1 million into five local nonprofits.
The In Memory of Arthur (IMOA) initiative — named after his late brother, Arthur — will grant the money to the organizations over three years. They include:
• Philadelphia Youth Basketball League
• New Options More Opportunities (NoMo)
• Youth Empowerment for Advancement Hangout (YEAH Philly)
• Boys & Girls Club Philadelphia
• Rhymes with Reason
“Philadelphia has been a place where many of my dreams were able to come true, and I wanted to do my part to bring that to others,” he said in a statement. “There are a number of organizations in Philadelphia that are creating positive tangible change, but with the IMOA Initiative, we really wanted to focus on those who are often overlooked, but deeply understand the communities they serve.”
Embiid said he will also visit and volunteer with the grantees on a year-round basis. Youth will also get access to Sixers seats.
Embiid’s brother Arthur died in 2014 in a car accident in Cameroon at the age of 13.
