PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The longtime head of Philadelphia's police union is stepping down.
Philadelphia's Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 5 says President John McNesby will leave to take a new position with the state in the coming weeks.
There's no word yet on what that new position will entail but his last day will be Nov. 10.
McNesby has led the union since 2007, following nearly 30 years as a Philly police officer.
"As the longest-running president, I wanted to leave when members would ask, 'Why is he leaving?' not, 'When is he leaving?' It's that time," McNesby wrote. "I will still be available to help or lend guidance as my right-hand guy and first VP Roosevelt Poplar finishes out the remainder of the term. TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!"
The union's board is expected to meet next week to elect his successor.
