WILMINGTON, Del. (KYW Newsradio) — Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings said Monday that an indictment has been secured through a grand jury against 23-year-old John Wallace-Bey on seven felony charges in last week’s fatal shooting inside ChristianaCare's Wilmington Hospital.
"Those charges include the following: murder in the first degree for the premeditated killing of Ethan Hillman; attempted murder in the first degree for the shooting of Jayden Ellis."
Officials said the investigation revealed that on June 16, Wallace-Bey, who was in a six-month non-clinical IT program, got into an argument with 19-year-olds Hillman and Ellis, who were also in the program.
ChristianaCare’s incoming Executive President and CEO, Jenn Schwartz, said Wallace-Bey asked a supervisor if he could leave early.
"He was not sent home, not fired, or disciplined in any way. Mr. Wallace-Bey was expected to return the next day for work."
Schwartz said he came back later that day, around 3 p.m., allegedly using an employee access badge to enter an employee entrance, and then went to an administrative area where he shot each of the 19-year-old victims once. Hillman died from his injuries. Ellis is in critical but stable condition.
Officials said after the shooting, Wallace-Bey boarded a train to Philadelphia, where he was arrested hours later.
Schwartz said the gun used in the shooting has not been recovered. Security measures at the hospital have since increased.
An extradition hearing is scheduled later this month.
