PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia firefighters battled a massive three-alarm fire that broke out at a Kensington garage Wednesday morning.
Thick black smoke from the building near Kensington and Indiana avenues could be seen from miles away on I-95. The fire started around 7:20 a.m.
More than 120 fire crew members were on the scene and got it under control by 9 a.m.
Officials said no one was injured and no nearby homes were evacuated, though residents are advised to keep their windows closed due to the smoke.
Assistant Deputy Commissioner Derek Bowmer said the building appears to be an auto shop and multiple cars were inside. Fire officials are investigating further.
Two schools are close to that intersection — Conwell Middle and Willard Elementary. Staff and students at Willard are reporting to Conwell for the day due to the fire.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
