PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — If there’s one person in this world who knows the power of the presidency, it’s Olivia Pope, played by Kerry Washington in the hit show “Scandal.”
“We are in a country right now that is at a turning point. We are at a moment where we have the capacity to defend the soul of this nation, and that’s gonna happen here in Pennsylvania,” said Washington, who came to Mount Airy Saturday to call on voters to show out for Vice President Kamala Harris on Nov. 5.
“You all are the real Olivia Popes, you are the ‘Avengers,’ you are the people who have the power to transform this democracy and protect each other and stand up for each other, and do what’s right in this moment,” she said.
Mayor Cherelle Parker stood side-by-side with Washington to stump for Harris.
“The Keystone State of Pennsylvania is the path to the White House,” Parker said. It was the case in 2020, and 2024 is shaping up to look the same, with Philadelphia and its surrounding counties getting most of the attention from Harris and former President Donald Trump in the waning days of the campaign.
“The City of Philadelphia and our Southeastern Pennsylvania sister counties… they all increased their voter turnout,” Parker said.
With Election Day just 10 days away, Washington called on attendees to remember their power.
“... Because Olivia Pope, unfortunately, I have to tell you ladies, is not real… She can’t vote, she can’t knock on doors, she can’t make phone calls, she can’t donate, she actually doesn’t have the power to protect this great democracy, but you all do.”
