PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The more shots that go into arms, the more we learn about the vaccines.
Severe anaphylactic reactions can occur when someone is allergic to a substance or food, and they can be deadly. One of the major concerns at the start of making the COVID-19 vaccine was anaphylaxis.
According to the CDC, the information thus far is good. Anaphylactic reactions occurred in only 2.5 cases per 1 million doses administered of the Moderna vaccine. For the Pfizer shot, the rate was 11 cases per 1 million doses.
Another study tracked more than 52,000 health care workers, who filled out a symptom survey after their first dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Significant allergic reactions occurred in just 2.5 per 10,000 people.
Nevertheless, a 15-minute waiting period is required for all who get the vaccine so that medication can be given in the event of a reaction.
