KYW Medical Report: Tips to avoid sprains and strains

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — If you look at any top 10 list of sports injuries among weekend warriors, sprains and strains take the lead.

Whether you are 20 or 60, there are three things that put you at risk for those cumbersome injuries.

The first is not being active in a particular sport or being active altogether. If you are in this category, there is a simple solution: Start slow and build from there.

Another key problem is the sport you play and the amount of contact. Pickup basketball, for example, can be great fun, but quick-darting movements and reliance on others to be just as fast can lead to contact and potential injury. Pick your activities wisely and use good judgment.

Finally — and many of us are guilty of not doing this — take time to warm up. The incidence of overstretching and tearing of ligaments, muscles or tendons can be greatly reduced if you take time to stretch. Don't fall into the trap of rushing to exercise without time to prepare.
