PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Loneliness and isolation are two of the major complications of COVID-19.
During the past year, most of us can point to times of isolation and loneliness due to the need to social distance to prevent the spread of the virus.
One group may have it harder than the rest: the elderly.
At a time in life when they should be spending time with family, they are often alone. For some, a pet can help bridge the gap, but for many others, a pet is not practical.
Some are turning to robotic pets. Like real pets, robot pets respond to a person’s touch and voice and can imitate animal behavior and develop their own personality.
Researchers also have found that they can be a significant help in providing psychological support for people with dementia.
The FDA classifies robotic pets as a biofeedback device, and developers have applied for Medicare approval.
