KYW Medical Report: The key to exercise is consistency

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — High school and college coaches often use the phrase “no pain, no gain,” but that’s not always the best advice.

Exercise, of course, is important. We spend hundreds of millions of dollars on medications, but the best medicine is often exercise — and it’s free.

Your doctor has likely told you the same thing, but there is one thing often not said: Exercise does not have to be painful. It just needs to be consistent.

A grueling workout that leads to pain will discourage most from exercising on a regular basis.

When you are exercising for general health, the key is consistency. Twenty to 30 minutes several times a week can make a world of difference.
