PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Resource organizations often face an increased need for support during the holiday season.

Which is why The Attic Youth Center in Center City, a nonprofit that provides opportunities and safe spaces for LGBTQ youth, ages 14 – 23, is looking for donations.

“The center sees a higher volume of youth during the holiday season as family dynamics and lack of acceptance complicate matters for the youth,” said the center’s executive director Jasper Liem.

The organization has a life skills center that provide individuals with a sense of belonging, connection and understanding.

They make homecooked meals Monday through Friday because many youth are left without secure housing and access to food, Liem explained.

In addition to offering a wide range of programs and services that supply individuals with support and skills needed to foster independence, the organization also provides things many may take for granted, like basic hygiene products.

“A lot of youth don’t have access to, you know, soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion,” Liem said. “Especially with the winter coming, no one wants to walk around with ashy elbows.”

“Anyone feels more human when we feel clean and put together.”
