MacKenzie Scott, Bezos’ ex-wife, makes $20M donation to Philly nonprofit

Benefits Data Trust helps people access food, health care and education assistance

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Mackenzie Scott, the multi-billionaire and former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has made a massive donation to a Philadelphia nonprofit that helps people access government benefits.

Benefits Data Trust has a straightforward mission, according to CEO Trooper Sanders.

“To help Philadelphians and residents across Pennsylvania, and indeed the nation, who need help buying food, accessing healthcare, putting themselves through school,” said Sanders.

“Being a bridge between what they need and the federal, state and some local benefits that can help them achieve that.”

Sanders said they help people access SNAP, Medicaid and WIC assistance through a process that can sometimes be convoluted and complicated.

He added that the last few years of the pandemic shown how valuable of a resource they are.

“My team worked tirelessly to make sure that as many people who needed benefits and were eligible for them could them, so they could get through this crisis and get on with their lives.”

Scott, a multi-billionaire, rewarded their work with a $20 million grant.

“It is a vote of confidence in the work that we have done since 2005 to help BDT, to make sure we could serve as many people as possible and connect them with benefits and also improve the system as a whole," said Scott.
