PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Lower Merion police have arrested a man in the hit-and-run on City Avenue last month that killed a woman in a wheelchair.

Jamal McCullough, 37, of Philadelphia, is facing several charges, including leaving the scene of an accident involving death and tampering with evidence. He is accused of being the driver who struck and killed 61-year-old Tracey Cary, who was in a wheelchair. It happened around 2 a.m. on Nov. 11 as Cary left the Taco Bell on City Avenue, near Conshohocken State Road.

Lower Merion Police Officer Chris Sheffer said authorities were able to find surveillance video of the car, which they released at a news conference the day of the crash.

“As a result of that news conference, we received numerous tips, which ultimately led us to identifying Mr. McCullough as well as his vehicle, and we were able to recover his vehicle on Nov. 13,” he said.

Right after the crash, police said McCullough stopped in a parking lot, got out, and looked at the damage to his car.

Officials said they identified McCullough after they found the car, and he cooperated with the investigation.

Sheffer said Cary was well known in the City Avenue corridor. Police hope the arrest can bring her friends and family some closure.

McCullough is free on $50,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 11. Court documents do not list an attorney.
