PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man has been charged after police say he shot the Yardley police chief and had an hours-long standoff with law enforcement.
Colin Petroziello, 24, is charged with attempted murder as well as the attempted murder of a police officer, among other offenses.
Officials say a Bucks County probation officer was making an offender check on Petroziello Wednesday morning at Yardley Commons Condominiums when she heard a commotion inside. She alerted police, and Yardley Police Chief Joseph Kelly assisted in the checkup.
That’s when police say Petroziello fired a shotgun through the front door, striking Kelly in the hand and ear. The probation officer was not injured.
Petroziello then barricaded himself inside his apartment, leading to a four-hour standoff with police and SWAT officers. Officials say Petroziello’s mother was also inside, and he would not let her leave.
An hour into the standoff, his mother, who still had her cellphone, told authorities that her son had fallen asleep. She was able to toss the shotgun out the window and escape the apartment, according to the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office.
Petroziello was denied bail and is at the Bucks County Correctional Facility.
Kelly is expected to physically recover from his injuries.
