PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man escaped from police custody while he was being discharged from a North Philadelphia hospital Monday morning — the second person to evade police custody in a month.
Philadelphia police are searching for 29-year-old Alleem Borden. He was arrested around 4:30 a.m. Sunday in Fishtown after police found him sleeping in a car that investigators believe he stole. Investigators said the car was stolen two days earlier from a food delivery driver.
While processing in custody, he started to complain that he was experiencing pain, so officers on Monday morning took him to Temple University Hospital’s Episcopal Campus, located on Lehigh Avenue.
He was discharged from the hospital around 6:40 a.m. but as police walked him back to the car, Borden ran — still handcuffed. Police chased him but lost track of him near a gas station a few blocks away near Hancock Street. He remains on the run.
Authorities say Borden is not armed or dangerous, but police ask anyone who sees him to call 911.
Borden has a criminal record, including drug- and gun-related offenses, police said. His three most recent arrests were for car theft. Also on his record: escape from law enforcement in Cambria County after an assault arrest.
Last month, 17-year-old Shane Pryor escaped custody after he was transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for a hand injury. His escape led authorities on a five-day manhunt.
Correction: This story has been updated to reflect the correct spelling of the suspect's name. Police initially identified him as Alleem Bordan.
