PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was shot and killed in his pickup truck during an ambush attack outside his home in Rhawnhurst early Thursday morning.

The 34-year-old man and his wife got back to their house near the corner of Whitaker and Bleigh avenues around 1:30 a.m.

“The wife was able to tell police that he just backed his vehicle into his driveway, they were just returning home — that’s when two males approached and fired,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. “We know at least 30 shots total.”

A witness told police that the shooters were in a parked sedan, and they emerged when the victim arrived.

The driver’s side door was peppered with bullets from two different guns, and the man was hit several times, police said. Officers arrived at the scene and took the victim to the hospital, where he died.

Police are looking through surveillance cameras in the neighborhood for their investigation.

Authorities are not sure of a motive, and they did not release a description of the shooters.
