PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A grieving mother led a memorial march through the streets of Philadelphia’s Cobbs Creek neighborhood Thursday to commemorate the hit-and-run death of her son more than a year ago.

Angela McDonald’s son Mark, then 32, was struck by a vehicle and killed while walking home near 58th and Pine Streets in Cobbs Creek in July of 2025. Police are still searching for the suspect.

“It hurts my heart,” McDonald said. “It hurts my heart because I believe that my son’s case has not been handled properly. That’s just the way I feel.”

Alongside pushing for justice for Mark, McDonald said Philadelphia’s streets need to be safer.

“We need more cameras,” she said. “We need more speed bumps. And I know people have a problem with speed bumps. I don’t. But if you’re not speeding, they won’t tear your car up. You slow down; that’s what the whole purpose of them is.”

Julio Rodriguez of Families for Safe Streets Greater Philadelphia agreed that the city needs to do more.

“Speed kills,” he said. “If you’re hit at 40 miles an hour, only two people out of 10 survive. So a number of things. One is speed bumps. Better lighting, speed limit reduction.”

Rodriguez also said the city should increase protections for cyclists, who are at risk on many of the same streets.

“Every single day that I ride in an unprotected bike lane — which is a lot of the time — I genuinely worry, like, am I going to make it back home?” he said.
