PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Parents of students at Masterman High School joined City Council members Monday in continuing to press the school district for assurances that their school building is safe. Parents are concerned about damaged asbestos from ongoing construction.
One day before the scheduled start of in-person classes, parents gathered on the steps of the Masterman school, saying the school district hasn’t yet fully addressed their concerns over asbestos.
Members of the Masterman Home and School Association said they have been trying to get complete asbestos reports from the district for months. They said even documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request have not adequately answered their questions.
“If you have information on a school and parents and the staff of that school want to know, ‘Hey, what’s the state of our building?’ and they say they have the information, why wouldn’t you share it? There’s no good reason not to share it,” said Luise Moskowitz from the HSA’s environmental committee.
The district said it has shared more than required.
Masterman teachers worked outside the building for two days last week because of asbestos concerns. The district said that was an unexcused absence, and their pay could be docked.
City Councilmember Helen Gym said Monday that several councilmembers would oppose any discipline against those teachers.
