PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A plane at Philadelphia International Airport was evacuated before takeoff Wednesday night.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. as the American Airlines flight was about to depart for Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport in South Carolina.

A passenger said there was smoke in the cabin and told NBC10 he helped people get out by walking on the wing of the plane.

American Airlines said the plane "experienced a mechanical issue" and passengers and crew "deplaned".

The aircraft was taken out of service and inspected by mechanics. The flight was rescheduled and departed Thursday morning.
