PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The study of anatomy is at the foundation of medical education. Physicians spend a significant part of their training learning about the human body in anatomy labs and examining cadavers in extensive detail.
Over the years, many people have donated thier bodies to science to help physicians in their training. However, a recent study of anatomy course leaders in U.S. medical schools revealed that 12.4% of cadavers are unclaimed bodies.
Ethicists at the University of Texas in Arlington have raised the issue and suggest there should be a switch to virtual reality anatomy. In 2020, Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine joined a growing number of schools moving to a cadaverless curriculum for medical students.
