PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Before scientists had developed vaccines or knew precisely how COVID-19 was spread, the hope was that someday the virus would be like the flu.

In other words, the virus would not be eliminated, but the numbers would be dramatically reduced with vaccines, medications and supportive care.

By their actions, the CDC thinks we are close to that point. They are winding down tracking the spread of COVID-19 in communities and instead, they are using hospitalizations to monitor spread.

In the U.S., there are still about 90,000 cases a week and the CDC still strongly recommends vaccines and home testing to know if you have the virus and to avoid spreading it to others.
