Medical Report: Can changing your diet really add years to your life?

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Do you want to add more than 10 years to your life? Researchers in Norway think they have a way to do so.

It is called the Global Burden of Disease study — not the kind of reading material you want to curl up with in bed after a long day and peruse. Yet it is fairly interesting: The researchers looked at more than 250 causes of death and almost 90 risk factors in people from more than 200 countries.

When they took all of that into consideration, they found that if you took the classic Mediterranean diet, added beans, lentils and peas, with a generous amount of walnuts and almonds, the impact was dramatic.

If you started at 20, you could gain more than 10 years of life. Here is my take: I have no idea if you will gain 10 years, but it is clear there is a benefit at whatever age you start.
