Medical Report: COVID-19 remains the third-leading killer in the United States

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It has been many months since the daily COVID-19 death-count graphics have left television screens. The situation is much improved from where we were, but the numbers remain high.

As of this writing, in the past 28 days, there have been 12,740 COVID-related deaths in the United States — or 455 per day. COVID remains the third-leading killer in the United States. It follows heart disease and cancer.

Thanks to widespread use of vaccines, the coronavirus can be thought of like the flu, but we need to understand it is deadlier. About 36,000 people are expected to die from the flu in a typical year. Based on the latest statistics, this year, we expect about 153,000 deaths from COVID. Your best bet is to get immunized and boosted. This is still a major health issue.
