Medical Report: Raiding your kids' treats? Here's a helpful trick

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — OK, confess! Did you grab some of the kids' Halloween candy when they were sleeping?

Over the years, many parents have found ways to rationalize raiding their children's trick-or-treat winnings. Among the various tempting choices, there is probably plenty of chocolate to be had.

Ignoring the obvious ethical dilemma — what about the health impact of your actions? According to numerous studies, eating chocolate in moderation can actually be somewhat healthy. That is because cocoa is high in flavanols, which are a type of antioxidant that can help with blood flow and reduce inflammation.

If you are going to pilfer chocolate, reach for the dark chocolate. It has the greatest concentration of flavanols.

One more thing: Kids usually know how much chocolate is in their trick-or-treat bag. So beware!
