PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Presbycusis is better known as age-related hearing loss. Reduced hearing puts older people at greater risk of injury, and the fact that they don't always hear what others are saying can make them look disinterested or not as mentally sharp as they might be.
What can make things worse is that reduced social interaction can actually worsen the progression of dementia.
The good news is that some hearing aids are more affordable than ever, and testing is available to determine other causes of hearing loss that might be leading to problems.
