Medical Report: The harmful health effects of daylight saving time

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The debate rages once again: What is better for your health? Changing our clocks twice a year or leaving them alone?

Many remember when it was a ritual to change every clock in the house — of course, far fewer clocks need our help these days, as the time change is pre-programmed.

Prior to artificial light, people were pre-programmed to wake at sunrise and sleep at sunset, and this has been imprinted on all of us.

Many sleep experts say changing time can impact health. They have linked daylight saving time and springing forward to a higher risk of stroke and heart attack. They also point to an increased number of hospital admissions for irregular heartbeats as well as a temporary increase in auto accidents.

The debate continues.
