PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Hearing loss can be more than an annoyance. It’s one of the greatest risk factors for dementia in older adults.

Just like eyeglasses or contact lenses can help people improve their poor vision, small electronic devices called hearing aids can help those who are losing their hearing as they age.

However, many people resist taking advantage of hearing aids.

According to a report in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association, this decision could come with a heavy price.

Because so many people refuse to take advantage of available treatment options, hearing loss has been called one of the largest modifiable contributors to dementia. If you or a loved one are losing your hearing, don’t resist potential treatments.
