PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — About 29 million Americans struggle with alcohol use disorder. Earlier this month, the surgeon general released a new report linking alcohol use to cancer.
A new report in the New England Journal of Medicine states that as many as 50% of cases of alcohol use disorder are inherited. Stress and anxiety play a greater role as lifestyle contributors.
The article finds that for those trying to battle the disorder, there is still a great deal of embarrassment and shame, which prevents people from seeking assistance, even though cognitive behavioral therapy and medications can help.
