PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Researchers in Switzerland are making important strides in the treatment of people with spinal cord injuries. When the spinal cord is damaged, it can cause paralysis and the parts of the body paralyzed are determined by what part of the spinal cord is injured.
The researchers have developed an implant that restores communication between the brain and spinal cord that helps patients with paralysis of the legs and arms regain some movement.
They are studying a brain-spine interface called a BSI that can digitally connect the brain and spinal cord and the hope is that it will lead to restoring normal function. An additional hope is that the device may help others with neurologic disorders.
