Medical Report: Think you can avoid drowning? See with these 3 simple tests

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — When weather conditions heat up in the summer, any form of water recreation can be a tremendous escape — but it is important to be prepared.

According to an American Red Cross study, about 80% of Americans say they can swim. The real questions are these: How does the average American define swimming? And can they save themselves from drowning in a stressful situation?

Before going to the beach or pool — especially an area that does not have lifeguards — there are some simple things you should be able to do to feel safe. In water levels over your head you should be able to:

• Tread water for 1 minute.
• Swim 75 feet without stopping.
• Get out of the pool safely without using a ladder.

If you are going to be on a boat, make sure you have Coast Guard-approved life jackets on deck — one for every person on board. And remember that seven out of 10 water recreation deaths among adults and teens involve alcohol.
